    • The 10 Planets: Their archetypes and what they "want."
    • The 12 Houses: The "where" of life (Home, Career, Relationships).
    • The Ascendant: Understanding the chart's structure and the "Rising Sign."
  • Practice: Print your own birth chart and the charts of 5 close friends. Identify every symbol without looking them up.
  • Required Reading:
    • Astrology: Using the Wisdom of the Stars in Your Everyday Life by Carole Taylor (The best modern visual guide).
    • The Inner Sky by Steven Forrest (Excellent for learning "narrative" astrology).
Year 2: The Geometry of Life (The Grammar)
Goal: Understand how planets talk to each other through "Aspects."

    • The Major Aspects: Conjunction, Sextile, Square, Trine, and Opposition.
    • Orbs: Understanding the "strength" and "tightness" of an aspect.
    • Delineation: Combining Sign + Planet + House (e.g., "What does Mars in Taurus in the 2nd House mean?").
    • The Moon Phases: Studying the 28-day cycle and its impact on mood and energy.

    • The Twelve Houses by Howard Sasportas.
Year 3: Timing and Transits (The Verbs)

    • Transits: Outer planet transits (Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) and their life-changing cycles.
    • Saturn Returns: Studying the major maturity milestones at age 29 and 58.
    • Retrogrades: Moving beyond the "Mercury Retrograde" meme to understand the internalizing of planetary energy.
    • Ephemeris Skills: Learning to use a planetary table to look up dates.
  • Practice: Keep a "Transit Journal." Note the exact day a planet touches a point in your chart and record what happened.
  • Required Reading:
    • Planets in Transit by Robert Hand (The "Bible" of transits).
    • Astrology for the Soul by Jan Spiller (Focused on the North and South Nodes/Destiny).
Year 4: Advanced Techniques (The Dialects)

    • The Gods of Change by Howard Sasportas.
Year 5: Philosophy & Traditional Roots (The Mastery)
Goal: Synthesize your knowledge and dive into the history of the craft.

  • Required Reading:
    • Hellenistic Astrology by Chris Brennan.
    • Astrology and the Authentic Self by Demetra George.

Pro-Tips for the Journey
  1. Get a Good App: Use TimePassages or AstroGold to calculate charts accurately.
  2. Listen to Podcasts: The Astrology Podcast (Chris Brennan) is essentially a free university-level education.
  3. Avoid "Pop" Astrology: Stay away from "Sun Sign" horoscopes in magazines; they often ignore 90% of the actual math.

Year 1: The Anatomy of the Chart
Focus: Visual Literacy and Archetypal Vocabulary.
  • Lesson 1.1: The Solar Anatomy: Why the Sun isn't just "you," but your fuel source and creative purpose.
  • Lesson 1.2: The Lunar Landscape: The Moon as your "auto-pilot" and emotional safety requirements.
  • Lesson 1.3: The Four Pillars (Angles): Deep dive into the Ascendant (Self), Descendant (Other), IC (Roots), and Midheaven (Legacy).
  • Lesson 1.4: Dispositorship: Learning who "rules" whom. If your Sun is in Aries, but your Mars is in Cancer, your Sun's "boss" is in a sensitive sign—how does that change the expression?
  • Lab Work: "The Blank Chart Challenge." Practice drawing a chart by hand to feel the 360-degree geometry.

Year 2: The Art of Synthesis
Focus: Moving from "List Reading" to "Storytelling."
  • Lesson 2.1: Aspect Patterns: Identifying T-Squares, Grand Trines, and Stelliums. These are the "power centers" of a chart.
  • Lesson 2.2: Dignity & Debility: Learning when a planet is "at home" (Domicile) or "in a foreign land" (Detriment). This explains why some people find their talents easily while others struggle.
  • Lesson 2.3: Chart Shaping: Is the chart a "Bucket," a "Bundle," or a "Splash"? The visual distribution of planets tells you if a person is specialized or a generalist.
  • Lesson 2.4: Retrograde Planets: Understanding the "inward" pull of planets like Mercury or Venus Rx in the natal chart.
  • Lab Work: "Celebrity Blind Readings." Have a friend give you a birth date of a famous person without telling you who it is. Try to describe their life and career using only the chart.

Year 3: The Clock of Destiny

Focus: Predictive Mechanics and Life Cycles.
  • Lesson 3.1: The Saturn Cycle: The 7-year "check-ins" and the 29-year "graduation."
  • Lesson 3.2: Outer Planet Transits: The slow-moving "wrecking balls" and "evolutionary leaps" of Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.
  • Lesson 3.3: Secondary Progressions: This is your "internal clock." How your natal Moon "progresses" through the signs every 2.5 years, changing your emotional focus.
  • Lesson 3.4: The Lunar Nodes: The Dragon's Head and Tail. Studying the path from your "comfort zone" (South Node) to your "soul's growth" (North Node).
  • Lab Work: "The Autobiography Project." Map out the 5 most important events of your life. Find the transits that were happening on those exact dates.

Year 4: Relational & Professional Specialized Reading

Focus: Applying Astrology to the real world.
  • Lesson 4.1: Synastry vs. Composites: Learning the difference between how two people interact (Synastry) and the third entity the relationship creates (Composite).
  • Lesson 4.2: Vocational Astrology: Using the 2nd, 6th, and 10th houses to determine "The Three M's": Money, Management, and Mission.
  • Lesson 4.3: Astro-Cartography: Brief introduction to how your chart shifts when you move to a different city.
  • Lesson 4.4: Solar Returns: Casting a chart for the moment the Sun returns to its birth position—your "Personal New Year" forecast.
  • Lab Work: "Compatibility Audit." Analyze a famous couple's breakup or long-term marriage using Synastry.

Year 5: The Master Practitioner

Focus: Ethics, History, and Traditional Techniques.
  • Lesson 5.1: House Systems Debate: Understanding the difference between Placidus (time-based) and Whole Sign (sign-based) houses.
  • Lesson 5.2: The Ethics of the Seer: How to deliver "bad news" (like a difficult Saturn transit) without causing fear or fatalism.
  • Lesson 5.3: Traditional Dignities: Learning "Bounds," "Decans," and "Triplicities"—the ancient fine-tuning of a planet's strength.
  • Lesson 5.4: Horary Astrology: Answering questions like "Where are my keys?" or "Should I take this job?" based on the moment of the question.
  • Lab Work: "The Consultation." Record yourself giving a 30-minute reading to a volunteer. Listen back to your phrasing—were you helpful or just "correct"?

Astrology Study Plan: Weekly Template

Weekly Study Template (Year 1)
Monday: Theory & Reading
- Spend 45 mins on a core concept (e.g., The Element of Fire).
- Read 10-15 pages of your primary textbook.

Wednesday: Chart Observation - Open your own birth chart. - Locate the planet or sign you studied on Monday.
- Note which House it lives in.

Friday: Synthesis & Journaling
- Write 3 sentences describing how that planetary energy shows up in your personality.
- Look for that energy in a celebrity or friend.

Sunday: Weekly Review
- Quiz yourself on the glyphs (symbols).
- Listen to one podcast episode related to your monthly theme.

Lesson 1: The Three Modalities (The "How")

Before learning the 12 signs, you must understand their rhythm. Every sign belongs to one of three "modalities" which describe how that sign moves and acts.
  • Cardinal (The Initiators): Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn. These signs start seasons. They are about action, leadership, and "The Spark."
  • Fixed (The Sustainers): Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius. These signs are in the middle of seasons. They are about endurance, stubbornness, and "The Flame."
  • Mutable (The Adapters): Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces. These signs end seasons. They are about transition, flexibility, and "The Wind."
Exercise: Look at your chart. Do you have a lot of planets in "Fixed" signs? If so, you might find it hard to change your mind once it's made up. If you have many "Cardinal" planets, you likely love starting projects but struggle to finish them.

Lesson 2: The Four Elements (The "Temperament")

This is the "substance" of your personality.
Element Signs Focus Key Word
Fire Aries, Leo, Sag Spirit & Inspiration Enthusiastic
Earth Taurus, Virgo, Cap Physicality & Results Practical
Air Gemini, Libra, Aqua Intellect & Social Mental
Water Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces Emotion & Soul Intuitive

Lesson 3: The Geometry of the 12 Houses

The Houses are the "theaters" where the planets play. Even if you don't know your signs yet, you can learn what the slices of the "pie" represent.
  • The 1st House: Your "Front Porch." How people see you and your physical body.
  • The 4th House: Your "Foundations." Home, family, and your private life.
  • The 7th House: Your "Mirrors." Committed partnerships and marriage.
  • The 10th House: Your "Public Stage." Career, reputation, and status.

Lesson 4: Understanding the Glyphs (The Alphabet)

To read a chart, you must stop reading words and start reading symbols. You should practice drawing these until they are second nature:
  1. The Sun ($\odot$): The Circle of Spirit with the dot of individuality.
  2. The Moon ($\leftmoon$): The Crescent of the soul and receptivity.
  3. Mercury ($\curly$): The Crescent, Circle, and Cross—Mind, Spirit, and Matter combined.

Your First Assignment
  1. Go to a site like Astro.com or use an app to pull your birth chart.
  2. Find your Sun, Moon, and Ascendant.
  3. Identify the Element and Modality for each of those three.
    • Example: "My Sun is in Leo, which is a Fixed Fire sign."

Building on your first year, let’s flesh out the specific modules and mastery lessons for the upcoming years. These lessons shift from identifying "what" a planet is to understanding "how" it functions and "when" it will act.

Year 1 (Extended): The Mechanics of the Soul
  • Lesson 1.5: Chart Orientation & Hemispheres: Does your chart live mostly above the horizon (public/career-driven) or below (private/home-oriented)? Is it on the left (self-reliant) or right (other-focused)?
  • Lesson 1.6: The Dispositor Tree: Mapping out who "reports" to whom. If your Venus is in Aries, Mars is its boss. Following this chain reveals the "Final Dispositor"—the ultimate motivation of your life.
  • Lesson 1.7: The Angles (Pillars of Life): Deep dive into the IC (your roots/family) and the MC (your legacy/highest calling).

Year 2: Planetary Strength (The "Condition" of the Gods)
  • Lesson 2.5: Essential Dignities: Learning the 5 "strengths." Who is a Guest (Peregrine), who is a King (Domicile), and who is an honored Guest (Exaltation)?
  • Lesson 2.6: Accidental Dignity: A planet might be strong by sign but "weak" because it’s in a challenging house (like the 6th, 8th, or 12th).
  • Lesson 2.7: Reception: When two planets "look" at each other and help each other out. This is how you find "hidden help" in a difficult chart.
  • Lesson 2.8: Combustion & Cazimi: What happens when a planet gets too close to the Sun? (Is it "burnt up" or "ennobled"?)

Year 3: The Moving Sky (Timing Techniques)
  • Lesson 3.5: The Progressed Moon: Tracking your internal emotional evolution every 2.5 years.
  • Lesson 3.6: Solar Arcs: Moving the entire chart 1 degree for every year of life. This is the "big picture" of major life shifts.
  • Lesson 3.7: Planetary Returns: Beyond the Saturn Return—studying your Jupiter Return (abundance every 12 years) and Mars Return (energy/drive every 2 years).
  • Lesson 3.8: Retrograde Cycles: Learning the "Station" points—the moments of highest intensity when a planet appears to stand still.

Year 4: Specializations (Niche Astrology)
  • Lesson 4.5: Vocational Astrology: Determining the "best" career path using the Earth houses (2, 6, 10).
  • Lesson 4.6: Asteroid Goddesses: Adding Ceres (nurturing), Pallas (strategy), Juno (partnership), and Vesta (devotion) to your readings.
  • Lesson 4.7: Fixed Stars: Looking at the "Behenian Stars" (like Algol or Regulus) and how they add a "mythic" layer to the chart.
