Hopping aboard she made herself at home. Two oars were fixed in rowlocks on either side and a handy bench sat between them for the work ahead. She settled in, thumbs pushing the wax deep into her ears. Another shove from Annis had the boat on its way out, and she gave his grim furrowed brows a final wave as she took up the oars, glancing back from the light into the darkness stretching out behind her. Immediately, with her ears clogged against the din of the storm, she could hear her heart throbbing, the sudden bellowing rush of her own breath as she wrenched the oars into place and began to row herself out to sea. The sounds came with every pull she took a breath and with every pounding second she glanced over her shoulders at the stretch of waves that tossed her craft like a plaything rolling in her palm. She could see the cliffs begin to rise from the pebbled beach, their pitch-black crags framed against the dull grey of the clouds beyond, shimmering under the rain’s tumult. In time they made themselves known, moving across the rocks at the base of the cliffs, their scales flashing back the grey of the skies and the light that bounded upon the waves. Fiadh could see their mouths open, calling to her as her vessel touched each crest before spilling down the other side once more. The merrow of the Àirde Sgreamhail were coming for her, their song sounding across the waters, beckoning her to join them in the depths. She knew what songs they sang; she had heard them before as an older Crow held her shoulder tight, looking out and listening from a distance. She knew their song’s pull, the way it had pricked and tugged at her mind, drawing her to join them, to plunge into the depths and swim with their melody.
